I think I was about 8 or 9 – I grabbed a boombox and a Pointer Sisters cassette tape. I set up in the entryway (because there was an outlet and a long hallway to dance in) and put in the tape. After about 15/20 minutes of searching (play, rewind, play, fast-forward, play, rewind, play, etc) I decided I like Jump (for my love). I couldn’t tell you today what I ended up choreographing or that I even realized that that was what I was doing, but I listened to sections of the song over and over and over and tried out all sorts of dance moves that I had been learning in class. I’m sure I showed what I ended up with to my parents and we may even have it on videotape somewhere in the family video archives that are in my parents’ basement. All I know is that was the first time I channeled my choreographic ideas and have been doing it ever since!
Got started young…
